As promised long ago (to whom I cannot recall), here is a SysEx dump
my Oberheim Matrix-6 version of the "Frankenstein" sound effect
originally done in the 70's on a 2600 by Edgar Winters. It uses a
self-oscillating VCF, frequency modulated by the DCO. LFO2 gates VCA1
with a square wave.
To perform, hold the bottom C on the keyboard. ENV2 fades the sound
in. The tracking generator shapes ENV1 to hold the VCFFQ in place
until ENV2 reaches max. To change the shape & timing of the fall,
adjust the tracking generator points to your liking. Keyboard
pressure cam be used to subtlely affect VCFFQ. The sustain pedal
works to immediately bring the frequency to its low-limit. Once at
the lowest point, the pitchbend and mod wheels allow real-time
modulation of the VCFFQ.
For the most authentic sound, you need a reverb unit that will allow
you to sweep decay time (room size) smoothly from hall to bathroom as
the frequency falls.
SAFETY NOTE: Please use a compressor/limiter! I have first-hand
experience with power amps going thermal and large JBL's going to that
big gig in the sky with this patch! (Though I can bet nearly analog
synth fan can relate similar experiences!)
This file might work with the Matrix-1000 too. If you come up with an
improved version, by all means pass it on. If you find this file will
not load on your unit, let me know. I'll send hand-transcribed patch
parameters.
