1/4" phone or banana?

You can't stack a 1/4" phone plug. :)

As for 'why did anyone use 1/4"'... Hard to say... It could of been
plug/socket availability, or that someone thought of one day needing to
switch a circuit when you plug in a jack, (ala 2600)...
