Funny, I wanted to write a similar reply myself, but then deleted it.
There *is* one advantage of the CMOS switch solution: In Manual
mode, you wouldn't have the MUX/ADC/DAC/DEMUX chain in the
CV path, so the knobs would work very smooth, i.e. no zipper
noise.
But in most applications, it would not be worth the additional
circuit overhead, and of course you'd also loose Edit Mode
and your ADC/DAC chain has to be exactly calibrated (which
is not needed if you have the ADC/DAC in all the time.)
I have the two most common Edit Modes always in front of me:
My OB-8 works relatively, my Prophet 5 jumps to the new value
when I touch a knob. Both has its own advantages: The Obie
solution is best for realtime tweaking, the Prophet solution is
best for programming a preset.
If I had *both* methods at hand at a same time, switchable by
a front panel button, I would be glad and content, and I wouldn't
need LED indicators and all.
As both solutions use the same hardware, it would be very easy
to switch between the two stategies by just switching between
two software routines, even back and forth while editing the same
patch.
Would be the optimum for me.
JH.
PS.: Does anybody know when SCI switched from Relative to
Jump mode? I heard that early Prophets worked Relative
as well, so when did they switch, after Rev 1 or after Rev 2 ?
