Shephard-generator - what is that ?

The barbers pole is a great alusion to the audiable effect,  Just like the stripes on a rotating 
barbers pole the phasing or orther effect appears to go on for ever...  Sounds strange.  Next 
time that you listen to a regular phaser listen out for the point at which the modulation 
waveform changes direction (it's pretty obvious usually)  The shepard function makes it 
appear that this point is never reached.  There is some great info at Music Machines (I 
think) about the Paia device.
