Since you are making a full digital control, you can use the fact that
many DACs are multiplying. I saw an interesting component that performs
a digital attenuation. The input is 8-bit but the internal DAC is
17-bit. So it has a ROM LUT for the lin-exp convertion. It can be easily
used to add MIDI velocity to synths.
