I just want to chime in regarding the 8038. A former coworker of mine had a nice old function generator based around this IC. It did the usual square, tri, sine waves, plus it had a built in LFO so you could do crazy FM stuff with it. It wasn't something you'd want to do Switched On Bach with, but it was definitely useful for cool electronic sounds. ROmeo
