Word on the street is that it is a piece of junk, so you may be right.

I'm sure this is why they sell their ICL8048 & 8049 Log/antilog amps :)

Your memory serves you correctly.  However they recommend following the 
outputs with op-amps (as the output impedance is like 1K), and as you 
would need seperate folowers for each waveform anyway, going a bit 
further to get the amplitudes even wouldn't that that much more of a pain 
-- or would it??

Sure, anything will work as an LFO :)
