This is one of those low-cost tricks that are detailed in ElectroNotes.  
Seems you can get 6 decent quality op-amps for cheap this way, but it's 
not very versatile.  

I thought about building a vocoder this way, then 
decided that a vocoders too important to sacrifice sound quality.

If you're interested I'll dig up some more info.
