After making my modular sound exactly like a 303 simply by driving it from the
gate/CV of the 303 I realized the same thing.
This led me to ask the obvious question....
How hard would it be to BUILD a simple hardware sequencer? I mean, something
like the 303, but maybe a little fancier - like 2 channels, ability to select
between 16 patterns while playing (rather than 8), etc.... It can't be THAT
hard - I mean, look at the interface! It's got 16 or 18 buttons and a bunch of
LEDs! The toughest stuff would be the firmware (I guess). Maybe the fact that
it has to be able to run at different tempos is tricky too, I dunno. I've never
done any assembly or analysis on uProcessor based circuits. Would is be so
hard?
Maybe an MC-303 with a midi->CV converter would just be a lot less trouble -
but that's not FUN!
