As far as I know, there WERE VCS3s that did have the preset (or "presto
patch" in EMS speak) connector. I know EMS at one time made a double sized
matrix that you could use to connect together 2 EMS synths that had the
connector. When I talked to Robin at EMS about it I seemed to rememeber him
askign me whether or not my putney had one, which would seem to point
toward at least SOME having them. My synthi has the connector but my (very
early model) Putney does not so I have never searched very hard for the
double matrix, i just wanted to learn about it while i had Robin on the
phone. ;>
Now to the diy part of my post that deals with the prestopatch connector.
When i bought my synthi the previous owner (who may even be on here, Mr.
James Husted please report to the principal's office) had ideas for making a
breakout box that would connect to the synthi via the prestopatch connector.
The box would be just a matrix of switches that represent the patching
matrix and would allow a routing connection to be made with a simple flip of
a switch. Not only would this be a convenient way to work, but it also
would avoid the dreaded "If i only had one more pin" syndrome. Anyone have
any ideas as to how hard this sort of thing would be to make?
BTW, and this may be obvious to some people, the name "prestopatch" may be a
bit misleading. Prestopatch cartridges (which EMS sold) just take care of
the pin connections. To make the patch, you still have to do all the knob
positioning on the front panel. Prestopatches that EMS sold came with a a
diagram of the front panel with the proper knob positions marked. Most of
you probably realized this, but i felt the need to make the distinction all
the same. ;>
