FET pin-outs

Hey all. I'm in the midst of building Paul Titschner's VC-Slew Limiter,
from ElectroNotes.
How do I go about finding the pin-outs for a FET? Or is there a standard?
It specifies a 2N3819, but I was recommended a 2N5545 or NTE312 as
replacement (I'm using the NTE). I thought I knew, but based the results
upon powering up the circuit, I think I'm incorrect. :) If there's a source
for this on the 'net, please tell me. If it's in a book, please tell me
(it's not in any of the books I have currently). Or, if you happen to know
the actual pin-outs, tell me that too! Thanks.
