I could be wrong about this (my copy of Electronotes is at home), but I
believe that the frequency shifter in EN has a preamp module for exactly
this purpose.

I just joined the list yesterday, so I don't have a good feel for what is
or isn't appropriate to it, but I will say that you weren't bothering me at
all.
