forced clocking

I came across this many years ago, and successfully implemented a scheme
using an inverter so that both polarities of the clock are available, and
feeding clk into one "crystal" input and its inverse (clk/) into the other.

For experimental purposes, you might want to put a couple of
current-limiting resistors in series with each input at first, so you don't
blow your microcontroller up if the above approach is inappropriate. You'll
probably find you can gently reduce their value to zero without seeing
smoke. Keep clock traces as short as possible.

For a really definitive answer, ask the tech support people at the IC
manufacturer.

Kevin.
