I have one and it's a rotating disk inside something that looks very much like
a foodcan (I don't know the correct english word), filled with oil. The
"playback head" can be moved and that's how to set the delay time.

It has been used in an DMX delay I've tried, it was a 8 or 5,25" disk though.
I recall it being noisy and dull. Maybe a harddrive could do the job better,
then you could get one audio channel per head. Hmm, maybe something to
consider.
