FW: Surface mount synths??

It is possible to solder surface mount parts yourself. All you need is solder
paste and a heat gun that gets hot enough to melt the solder. The molten solder
tends to hold the components in place. While I have never built an entire board
this way, I have used this method to replace individual components. It should
work for an entire board if you're careful.

Hey sure that'd work - I can't think of any components that aren't
available in SOIC, LCC, or other SM format except maybe for the PTC
tempco's. I don't think that temp or x-talk issues would be any worse
     than current PCB's.

But - you'd have to farm this out fer sure. CAD up the artwork, buy
the parts, and dump them at your local PCB house. Unless of course you
happen to have a vapor-solder machine at home, not to mention the
     microscope work table....

Yah you could pack a few dozen minimoogs into an ARP 2600 keyboard
case this way. Where the heck would the panel controls go????

I think it's do-able, for the synth DIYer with the budget.
