   I built a phaser based on the ARP ladder in 1988. I did try
   substituting the 3086s for BC109s, but for some reason it didn't
   work very well. I'm not sure, but I probably used BC109Cs, which
   have a much higher beta than the 3086. 

Did you match the transistors?  I can imagine that the sound of this
circuit might be suboptimal if the transistor pairs weren't matched.

A big question is how much quieter is the circuit with 14 MAT-02's or
LM394's?  If it was significantly quieter you could get rid of the
compander, which I'm guessing would be a big win.
