FW: PSU smoothing caps

Hi Chaps

I'm wracking my brains here trying to remember how to work out the value   
of the smoothing capacitor *before* the voltage regulator for a PSU I'm   
building, the parameters are

mains freq=50Hz supply voltage 240vac, transformer winding output 11.9v   
unregulated.

The PSU design provides +5 volts via a LM323 - max current pull is 3 Amps   
 - primary smoothing cap value=???????

any help appreciated
