It converts a continuous incoming voltage to one of a set of discrete
fixed voltages.  In other words, a smooth-to-staircase converter with
the stairsteps at fixed points.  What's this good for?  If you have a
slow transient AR coming in, you could use the quantized output to play
an up-and-down scale.  Hooked to a sequencer, it lets the synthesist
easily set notes on the stage pot without a lot of laborious trial and
error tuning - a real time saver if you're drunk or stoned (or so I've
heard..)
What I'd like to know is, why I've never heard of anybody doing this to
a Theremin!
