Hello, all. I just joined the list, and am surprised by the amount of
traffic. I don't know how much longer I'll be able to hold back from
the conversation, so I thought I'd be proper and introduce myself.
I was weaned on electronics. Bult my first crystal radio before I
could read (good, anyway). Spent my youth "protected" from the evils
of rock and afflicted by piano lessons, and spent my teens listening
to yes, floyd, fast, glass, heart, tchaikovsky, etc. through the big
console stereo in the living room (with my "good" technics turntable
and homebuilt phono preamp, of course). Built lots of projects,
collected data from just about every synth maker - but never was able
to actually afford all the cool stuff I read about.
I'm older now, and I can change that. Good to find so much inspiration
on the net. As I said, I know electronics like the back of my hand,
but I'm just getting reacquainted with synths - so please be patient
when I ask them stupid questions.
Like... what's a quantizer for?
Also, what do "analog synth" people do for keyboards? Is this a purist
thing, or are midi units OK? The fellow who wrote the page I was at
when I signed onto this list had built a pretty large modular and even
mentioned building the keyboards! I made a set of keys in my youth
with a set of old plastic keys from a Magnus chord organ and a bunch
of cut up bass guitar strings (the "wipers") - but I can't imagine
doing this with something larger- or something you wanted to be able
to count on...
