filter / amp chips

I'm going to be starting my senior design project in EE next month.  I'm
considering designing some sort of digital monosynth (the class focuses on
digital design), though i'd like to have an analog filter and VCA on the
output under cpu control. 

The CEM or SSM line of filter/amp chips sound nice.  Are their a particular
chips i should look for if i have cpu control in mind?  ones i should 
shy aways from?  simplicity is always nice :)

I've got schematics for the Prophet 600 and Prophet 2000.  I figure these 
could provide examples when things get kind of hazy.
