I've had similar experiences, the 3086 seems to work better in some
circuits, which is funny, because from the data sheets you get the
impression that the 3086 is a "relaxed" version of the 3046.
The 3046 transistors are guaranteed to be Vbe-matched to within 5 mV,
and the input offset current of the differentially connected pair
also has a specified maximum value. The manufacturer does not specify
these parameters for the 3086. The 3086 transistors might have better
temperature tracking charcteristics, though...would be interesting to
do some testing.
