The '193 is a great choice for a 16-step sequencer counter. Yup it's
got all the stuff - up count, down count, pre-load inputs, clear
input, carry and borrow outputs, etc. If you want to have
push-button/gate inputs for step selection with the pre-load input,
you'll need to do a parallel-to-binary encoder on the pre-load input
front end, but that's no biggie.
Sync versus ripple counting is not an issue at the relatively low
frequencies we're taking about here.
As with any CMOS designs that have functions that will make their way
to the front panel, you'll need to protect the inputs and outputs.
Other than that it should be a simple circuit.

Hi DIY -
A while ago there was a discussion here about using the CD4024 + CD4067 for
16-stage sequencing. I'm wondering why no one brought up the idea of using the
CD40193 4-bit counter instead of the 4024. Seems like it's MADE for the job. It
has Up and Down counter inputs as well as presetting "jam" inputs (with a
write-enable) for those programming buttons that every cool sequencer (er,
programmer) has... I just discovered this chip and I just wanted to see if any
of you better informed folks knew why it would might be a bad choice for this
application...
The 40193 is synchronous, not ripple, but that's better in this case, isn't it?
- Thanks,
Chris
