AD-ROM-DA??

I don't know if this is trodden ground here, but has anybody ever done
anything along the lines of
a voltage converter that takes an A to D and then uses a ROM as lookup and
then out to a D to A?


It seems that one could make the following from this:

Quantizer
Staircase processor
Log to Lin
Lin to Log
Scale converter
Note excluder
Inverter
Limiter

etc.

Except for some clocking circuitry possibly, this all seems pretty easy.

What am I missing here?
