I've come up with something that works well for me.
I buy the Dynart Toner Transfer paper, which has a water soluble
coating and prints in a laser printer or copier. You print your
stuff on it, then spray two coats of clear lacquer on it, cut out the
labeling areas you want, then soak in water and slide onto the
surface you want to letter. Once this is dry, spray the decal-ed
surface with clear lacquer to preserve the lettering.
If you want colors other than black, you apply IBfoil to the
decal sheet before spraying with the first lacquer coat. IBfoil is
found at stationery and office supply stores. It's a plastic sheet
coated with a colored metallic foil which sticks to toner on
printer/copier printed paper. You lay the IB foil sheet over the
printed/copied decal sheet, iron the sheets to remelt the toner and
cause it to stick to the back of the IB foil and then peel away the
IBfoil sheet. The colored metallic foil sticks only to the toner
areas. Then you spray two coats of clear lacquer to make a carrier
layer for the decal, cut out the lettering, soak it, slide it on, etc.
You can apply artwork in black, gold, silver, and blue, red, green,
and paisley swirl metallic in any pattern you can laserprint or copy.
