I produced some strange sounds on my modular last weekend
Proof that modulars go well with drugs. :-)
Here's a guess... Since the output of the sequencer is modulating the
VCO, the first two sequence voltages will go by fast, and the third
one will go by at the normal rate, so it's no longer a 66% pulse. The
perceived pitch is no longer as intended, but that's true with
exponential FM in general.
Now if the VCO's control voltage input has any kind of low-pass filter
on it (ie., a cap to reduce noise) then frequency changes will not be
instantaneous, the feedback modulation effect will spread over
multiple cycles, and you've got yourself a chaos generator. Perhaps
the pitch where the modulation spreads over multiple cycles happens at
your F1.
