This is not the same chip as Speak and Spell, but the SP0256-AL2 phoneme chip and partner CTS256A-AL2 text-to-speech chip will do a similar vintage speech synthesis sound. You can still find these for somewhat expensive prices on ebay. There are circuits out there which will allow you to send serial text (e.g., from a computer) that it will say for you.
https://www.smbaker.com/cts256a-al2-text-to-speech-board

On Tue, Sep 1, 2026 at 2:14 AM ulfur hansson via Synth-diy <synth-diy@synth-diy.org> wrote:

hi list!
does anyone have information how one could possibly build a classic Speak n Spell chip analogue using currently available parts?

using AI or microcontrollers is not something that gets me going - i'd love to explore vocal synthesis using discrete logic and readily available jellybean parts -well..... perhaps a daisy to run arrays or tables etc... but im keen to see if anyone has legacy schematics or literature on vocal synthesis.
your thoughts are greatly appreciated!
