Thanks for pointing out the links to the Dark Star samples – I’ve never heard the Dark Star, just read the description. I have to wait to get home to hear the samples, so I haven’t heard them yet, but I had assumed it wouldn’t be considered “musical” in the same sense that a VCO-VCF-VCA could be considered musical. However, music is in the ear of the beholder =). The beauty of synthesizers is that they can be what you want them to be, just as music can be what you want it to be. Of course, if you want to make a living at it, it’s got to be at least what a lot of other people want it to be as well ;-p. 


I love most music (with the exception of most new “Country and Western”, which just depresses me). Anything in the range from Stockhausen to Debussey to Deep Purple is totally enjoyable to me. IMHO, the one instrument that can handle this range of music is the synthesizer. Some people use the synth to imitate other instruments and some people use them to create sounds as yet unheard, both of which I find valid and fascinating. IMO, the Dark Star, in terms of the sounds it must produce and (just as importantly) the control signals it produces would be a valuable addition to any synth in terms of expanding the ultimate versatility of the instrument. I’ve got a lot of samples of synths from a lot of different pages, and I enjoy them all. I usually loop them while I’m working on a synth project for inspiration. But one sample that I particularly love to listen to is Grant Richter’s Wogglebug demo MP3. There’s nothing particularly ‘musical’ about it in the classical sense, but that sample just trips my trigger to no end. The wife kind of scratches her head over it, but the kid (three and a half years) and I love it. 

Think about the sounds in terms of a composition – it may sound weird and ‘too much’ on it’s own. But, like any effect, a little dab will do ya. Most off-the-wall sounds/effects wear pretty thin when used too much - think ring modulator and the early days of electronic music. But they can really be the spice in a composition if used in the right proportion.

I hate to say it but, does the SN76477/Darkstar really sound this bad? Every one seems to rave about it, but these samples would lead on to believe otherwise. I'd hate to spend the time and money building a SN76477 based module and find it unusable. Any opinions would be appreciated.
