yes this was very popular in mid-90s, especially for pulse transformers running around a MHz or so.  There were a range of low profile ferrite cores which fitted through holes in the PCB and snapped into the bottom half ferrite under the PCB without any clamps.  Haven't seen them for years though.

Has anyone ever tried putting transformers in pcb layers? I guess it
wouldn't be audio frequencies (due to size), but it might still be
fun. How about: Audio -> RF -> tiny transformer -> RF -> Audio?
