Eventually, you really want to figure out how your synth is being
used. If it's something like a 303, then you want a lot of resonance,
and you want to figure out if it should be lin, exp, audio, whatever,
so that the performance is the best. If it's like a mini, then that's
different as well, you want some crunchy bass. If it's a pad or chord
machine, you want less pronounced resonance, so most of the range of
your potentiometer will be in the non-resonant part.
