As Dan Lavry points out, no external clock can possibly exceed the quality of a properly-designed internal clock. The key is that the internal circuitry can introduce jitter if it's not properly designed, and in those situations a "studio quality clock" cannot possibly help because the clock still passes through the internal circuitry on the way to the DAC chip. There's not any sort of magic that exists to get around this requirement (no matter who makes the studio quality clock or how much it costs).
Thus, you really have to understand PCB design and layout to avoid grounding and other issues that might introduce jitter into the sample clock. I once talked to a TASCAM design engineer who pointed out that the company's digital audio product's quality improved dramatically once they understood the important of the clock circuits, including the layout of the traces that carry the clock signals.
There are other sources of noise besides clock jitter, though, and delta-sigma ADC has particular kinds of noise that aren't present in multi-bit ADC. All ADC needs a low-pass before the converter to prevent aliasing. A common technique in modern ADC is to oversample and then use a digital filter to implement the anti-aliasing filter. However, 1-bit delta-sigma doesn't have enough bits to properly implement the dither for the SRC in the digital filter, and thus distortion and idle tones are present. Although it is indeed possible to convert between DSD and PCM and vice versa, it's the original ADC process where the distortion is introduced.
The idle tones completely kill any hope of DC accuracy, and the distortion doesn't help much, either.
It's for this reason that the best implementations use at least five bits for the front end of delta-sigma ADC, and then implement the anti-aliasing filter in a way that can be properly dithered without distortion or idle tones. Once the ADC process is completed (including anti-aliasing), the digital samples can be output in DSD or PCM via appropriate conversion.

If the interface out of the ADC and into the DAC needs to be serial, that does not mean that the ADC + DAC need to be 1-bit delta-sigma. There are plenty of I2S interfaces that handle multi-bit samples (zero-padded in the LSBs if less than 24-bit or even less than 16-bit).
