Solid state laser diodes (as used in CD/DVD burners) are also apparently very susceptible to static damage. I used to work for an electronics company that used low power laser diodes in one of their assemblies, and it was a sackable offense to walk into the production area without first putting on your antistatic lab coat and testing your heal grounding strap, etc...

They had previously been bitten with product recalls due to gradual degradation in laser diode performance attributed to static damage during the assembly. Once the assembly process was tightened up, there were no further failures of this type.
