It should work okay, Tom. At least with PWM you can have some control over the opening and closing times of the gate. You might need anti-aliasing and reconstructing filters either side of your PWM 'VCA' to stop any HF energy present at the input from aliasing, and to reduce residual HF output from the PWM switching at the output respectively. Maybe just throwing a decent analogue VCA at it would be cheaper and easier though when the filter requirements are factored into the PWM design.
