So yes, the audio generation code that runs on your electronic 
tabulating machine would not qualify as a synthesizer, which if you put 
keys on it doesn't become a keyboard musical instrument -- that's a 
harpsichord (maybe I'll grant the distinction to the pianoforte as well, 
despite it being a Johnny-come-lately)
