Sounds like you've already made a call on this - but FIY - I've used 5005 Grade Aluminium in 1.5mm using panel mounted jacks and sockets (not personally a fan of right-angle mounting) with no problems.
I think you'd have to work pretty hard to bend a panel - even at that thickness - unless it didn't have very much mounted to it and was pretty big. Some of the super-humans on the list might disagree!

Will be going with 20mm x 35mm angle braces for strength, to reinforce
some 2mm panels I already have but had previously ruled out. Seems like
they may be 5000s, as they are pretty easy to drill, and have quite a
high bendosity quotient (technical term) ;-).
The braces will do double duty as a means to secure PCBs.
