My $0.02:

Companies which only exist to make money typically don't exist for very
long.

Major corporations (and their profit motives) are a serious force for good
in this world (there, I said it).  I can't think of too many other entities
that can organize human endeavor on such a vast scale.  And yes, they
require serious regulation.

Finally, my impression is that the semiconductor industry isn't all that
profitable.  2012 was a particularly bad year for semi manufacturers, with a
2.3% drop in overall renenues.  Analog Devices's annual revenue for 2012 was
10% less than 2011, according to their investor relations website.  By
comparison, Apple enjoyed a 45% growth in annual revenue in 2012, so this
poor performance in semis does not necessarily reflect weak sales in
electronics.
