only need one resistor, its a series circuit (two terminal device).

its entirely possible, although you probably don't have the resistor value
you need (very low ohms, maybe milliohms). Also, the ESR is distributed
(physically) so heat is spread around. You need to be sure your resistor can take it...

Which reminds me I was thinking last week about whether two resistors
in series with a cap (before and after) are enough to simulate ESR. As
I understand, ESR in those things comes from the oxide layer
collecting on the electrodes.

I think it would be interesting to think about how ageing, 30-year-old
parts in synth circuits can be simulated with new parts. Then do an
analysis of something like that translated onto some vcf or vco that
has "classic analog sound", but only because it's gotten old and the
parts have deteriorated.
