Well yes, but surely the source of the gate signal is going to be the 
sequencer anyway?

i.e.
For MIDI sequencer, the gate signal is from the note on and note off 
messages (via a MIDI->CV/GATE converter)
For analog sequencer, the gate signal is from the clock.
